About Hinggan Forestry Reserve

Located in the Greater Khingan Mountain range of Inner Mongolia, the Hinggan Forestry Reserve spans a large swath of predominantly boreal forest, including vast stands of larch, pine, and spruce trees. This forestry reserve is one of China’s largest forested areas and serves as an important ecological buffer zone between the temperate steppe and the colder northern regions. The landscape is characterized by gently rolling mountains, dense forest canopy, and pristine rivers and lakes. The reserve plays a critical role in conserving native flora and fauna, including several protected species such as the Amur tiger, Asiatic black bear, and a variety of migratory birds. Historically, the area has been managed sustainably for timber production as well as ecological preservation, reflecting China’s commitment to forest conservation. Outdoor enthusiasts visiting Hinggan Forestry Reserve can explore numerous hiking trails that wind through its quiet woods and along rivers, engaging in birdwatching, and experiencing the pristine natural environment. The reserve also supports winter sports in the colder months and is an excellent place for photography of landscapes and wildlife. While remote and less developed for tourism than many national parks worldwide, Hinggan Forestry Reserve offers a deeply immersive wilderness experience shaped by its vast, undisturbed forests and culturally significant indigenous and ethnic communities in the region.
